The secret to growth isn’t just about doing what the best do—it’s also about learning from what they don’t do. Sometimes the most valuable lessons come from the things they’ve avoided, the mistakes they didn’t make, and the distractions they’ve ignored.
I’ve noticed something strange though: people are often reluctant to take advice from those who’ve already achieved what they want. Instead, they’ll pay for advice from so-called experts, people selling the promise of success without showing any evidence of having achieved it themselves. It’s like they trust the image of professionalism more than the real thing.
The best thing I’ve done to level up my game is to listen to those around me who are further up the road. People who’ve walked the path, who know the ups and downs, and who can tell me firsthand what works and what doesn’t. My Unemployable podcast co-hosts have been instrumental in getting me through my recent plateau in my thinking and execution. They’ve shared real, practical insights that have shifted the way I approach challenges.
So here’s my advice: look around you. Who’s already where you want to be? Lean into their wisdom. Learn from their wins, and more importantly, learn from their mistakes. Don’t waste your time paying for advice from someone who hasn’t lived it. Get around those who have.
Growth comes from following those who’ve already walked the road—not just the ones who talk about it.
